Just ordinary people

Tell me, what do you see when you walk down the street, or look out of your car window as you travel in this world? People, buildings, weather. Well if this is all you see then perhaps you need to look closer, for walking right at you are thousands of fantastic stories.

Everyone has their story, what their families were like, are like. Some people can tell of great success, achievement and fantastic heroic tales about how they cured illness and saved the world. Others didn’t hit the headlines but each person’s life has it’s own unique fascination. Our lives are filled with stories and if we really think about it, that’s how we evolve.

Just think about it! “What is your story”? No matter how old you are what has happened from the moment you were born to the moment you are reading these words? That’s it! That’s your fantastic story!

I mentioned the word evolved earlier, we learn, we grow and we show others. Each story is equal because life is equal. Some people can tell you a story about how they walked on the moon; someone else can tell you how they kept the science laboratory clean whilst they invented the technology to get people to the moon!

Get the picture? All equal! With stories we have to take in what’s being said to us and to learn from what triggers our curiosity. It’s like the wine taster who first checks the aroma of the wine and then tastes and enjoys the effect of the wine on the palate before spitting out what’s no longer needed. Stories are about life and they can change life. They can equally give you the opportunity to learn from success and from failure.

This story is amazing: it’s about hope and courage directly from the heart of a man who was placed right at the bottom of the pile, labelled, locked away but yet he told his story. As you read, think about yourself: your life chances, your opportunities and the things which have stood in your way, against you, as you have strived to develop. Think about what you have learned and how you can begin to use this experience to help others to evolve through sharing the good news.

Just Schools. A whole school approach to Restorative Justice

by Belinda Hopkins

Description: 22B006

Order code: 22-B006   Price: £24.95
Format: 300 x 210 mm 208pp paperback

Restorative Justice is a dynamic and innovative way of dealing with conflict in schools, promoting understanding and healing over assigning blame or dispensing punishment. It can create an ethic of care and justice that makes schools safer and happier, not only through reducing conflict, but also in terms of developing active citizenship skills, good self esteem, open communication and team work in students.

From a teaching background herself, Belinda Hopkins is at the forefront of the development of restorative justice in the UK, and in this practical handbook she presents a whole school approach to repairing harm using a varity of means including peer mediation, healing circles and conference circles. She provides clear practical guidance for group sessions and examines issues and ideas relating to practical skill development for facilitators.

Clearly structured and with photocopiable sheets, this book is an excellent resource for teachers, schools counsellors and youth workers seeking a more positive and effective way to deal with conflict in educational settings.
